Khodorkovsky and his Prison
I was going through this article in a Russian newspaper and it really moved me. What can happen to a person in one moment, he can become a beggar from a king, as we say in Hindi (Raja se rank!)
This is exactly whats happening to Mikhail Khodorkovsky, languishing in a prison where he is sewing Mittens, of all things. The prison is located in an obscure place, somewhere in Siberia. The prison's contingent is of 18-20 years old.
Khodorkovsky wanted to pursue some scientific work, or to write something but he is surrounded by largely under educated criminals, with whom he can almost not talk. For name sake he is getting a newspaper, but only a local one, there is a television - only one for his barrack and shows only films all the time.
Khodorkovsky is working, sorry sewing, for 6 long hours after which he gets 4 hours of rest. He can meet guests only during his rest hours and that also one at a time. During his hours of rest he is also allowed to go to the library, its only visitor, though its not known what kind of books are available there and what does he read, but is known to spend most of his time here itself.
And yes, one more detail, it was very hard to find a job for Khodorkovsky in this prison. This prison of 1000 inmates has jobs only for 160 people, and it would have been unfair not to accomodate the ex boss of Yukos, a company which was supposed to become the world's largest privately owned Oil company.
But can Khodorkovsky protest and did his money help??
